Porsche T-Hybrid flat-six named among 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems

T-Hybrid powertrain gets prestigious nod from group of industry experts.

ATLANTA. The innovative T-Hybrid powertrain technology found in the current Porsche 911 GTS and Turbo S models (Type 992.2) has been named one of the 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems award.

The honor underscores Porsche’s ability to combine electrification and performance in a way that enhances the driving experience. The 911 GTS and Turbo S models gain a performance advantage by adding an electric motor between the engine and transmission and with electrically powered turbochargers capable of spooling themselves. In both cases the models using the all-new 3.6-liter flat-six engine provide immediate power delivery, excellent throttle response, and improved efficiency.

The Wards 10 Best Engines program has recognized outstanding propulsion systems for 32 years. Judges evaluate entries based on horsepower, torque, NVH management, observed efficiency, and new technology.

"We are excited to see our T-Hybrid technology win such a longstanding and respected award," said Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. "The new T-Hybrid powertrain is something you need to experience firsthand to fully appreciate. Power delivery is instant, urgent, and feels almost endless."

The e-turbochargers spool up to high speeds independently of exhaust gas pressure, eliminating turbo lag. When the gasoline engine is under load at high rpm, the units generate current that, depending on the scenario, can replenish the small high-voltage battery or directly power the electric motor between the engine and transmission. As a result, the system remains ready to supplement output even during prolonged high-demand use cases such as track driving.

“Quite clever how Porsche uses energy from the turbocharger as a generator,” Robin Warner Program Manager and Judge said. “As opposed to using a wastegate, that compressed air spins the electric motor and helps recharge the battery. No need for a wastegate, when you minimize the waste! It’s characteristics like this that make the 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid standout and worthy of winning a 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems award.”

The award-winning T-Hybrid technology currently powers seven model variants across the 911 GTS and 911 Turbo S product ranges. The same 3.6-liter flat-six engine powers those models, with the Turbo S featuring a pair of e-turbos to generate even more power than the single-turbo GTS variants. Both can be ordered through U.S. Porsche Centers and configured on Porsche.com/usa.
